As 2009 began, the promise of being on a new cycling team, living in a year state, and having a fiancee (after my girlfriend said "yes" in mid November 2008) meant that 2009 was likely going to be "unfamiliar" ground and a juggling act to find time for cycling.
I completely forgot about the Jack Frost TT in late February (which I had wanted to do since doing the Frostbite and IceBreaker TTs was just too far for what it was worth) but did remember to register for the first two Estacada TTs. Registering for these TTs was the motivation to get some work done on both my Fuji Aloha 1.0 TT bike and my Habanero Ti road bike. Both Estacada TTs were tough as 1) I was unfamiliar with the "not completely flat" courses and 2) the second Estacada TT was the longest TT I had ever done (at 20 miles long) but I completed both of them and now had ideas of what these TTs would be like for the 2010 season.

Since it was the 30th Anniversary of the Seattle To Portland Bicycle Classic (STP) in 2009, I registered for the event (like I had done every year since 2002) and my wife (my fiancee until we were married in late May) agreed that she would "sag" for me. I had thought of doing the ride in two days but a much later than wanted departure from Portland had me change my mind to just starting the ride around 9am at the park in Chehalis and just avoid the first half of the ride. Since the second half of STP is much hillier than the first half, I quickly found that having done zero outdoor riding other than the two TTs I had raced (and only some indoor cycling at the gym) meant that I was NOT in shape for distance cycling. The hills between Chehalis and Lexington really took it out of me and by the time I got to the park in Lexington, I was tired. I loaded the bike into the van and had the wife drive to Oregon. We stopped and got something to eat in Rainier, OR where she said I should get back on the bike. I did and rode to the high school in St. Helens. When I got to St. Helens, I decided that I really didn't feel like riding any more and I again loaded the bike into the van. Instead of getting back on my bike so that I could cross the finish line in Portland, since I hadn't started at UW in Seattle, I didn't have any reason to cross the finish line and directed my wife to just take us home.
I didn't know if I was going to ride again in 2009 but I did manage to do a few rides and go to check out some of the Springwater trail between Portland and Gresham. When the fall "end of season" bicycle sales started, my wife and I looked at several stores and found a good road bike for her (which she rode once before putting it away for the rest of 2009).
